FAQs on Dr. Charles Brenner — Leading Authority on NAD+ and Nicotinamide Riboside “NR”

As the popularity of NAD+ boosting vitamin supplement Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews) grows, so do the number of consumer questions. To answer many of these questions, we have the luxury of turning to Dr. Charles Brenner who discovered NR as an NAD+ boosting vitamin and who often shares his scientific, evidence-based opinions on various podcasts:

Is Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) Still Effective If You Dissolve it in Water?

Many people struggle to swallow capsules. One such person asked NAD+ expert Dr. Charles Brenner whether one can dissolve vitamin supplement Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews) (Podcasts) in water and still have it be safe and effective. Here’s what he said:

Is It Safe to Consume an Expired Bottle of Nicotinamide Riboside (NR)?

For a variety of reasons, consumers often find themselves with an expired bottle of vitamin supplement Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews). Is the NR still safe and effective? Here’s what Dr. Charles Brenner, who discovered NR as an NAD+ boosting vitamin said recently on Twitter:

Any Side Effects With Taking Nicotinamide Riboside (NR)?

Are there are any known side effects associated with taking B3 vitamin supplement Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews), in this case NR brand niagen? This is one of the most common questions we hear from potential consumers relating to NR. In the past, we’ve heard there aren’t any adverse effects. And in an interview last week, we heard this:

Scientists Warn About NMN

Last week, we wrote a blog post about the supplement NMN (FAQs and Anecdotes) entitled “If NMN is Safe, Why Don’t Regulators Approve It?“. We were subsequently made aware of an article by a group of scientists published last month in the Journal of Advanced Research entitled “Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) as an anti-aging health product – Promises and safety concerns“. It raises serious concerns about the safety of NMN. The following are the authors’ conclusions:

If NMN is Safe, Why Don’t Regulators Approve It?

Much to my surprise, lots of people take NAD+ boosting supplement NMN (FAQs and Anecdotes). But as readers of this site know, I’m certainly not one of them. While I’m sold on the importance of boosting NAD+ levels, I defer to the regulatory authorities in charge of evaluating consumer safety to determine which NAD booster to take. And hands down, it’s Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Anecdotes). It’s not even close. NR has been deemed safe by the FDA (NDI), Health Canada, EFSA, Australian TGA, and achieved GRAS status — NMN has received none of these approvals. What about the general science community? Well, they’ve clearly made their choice, too. There are currently 67 human clinical trials at some stage testing NR as a treatment for various diseases — only 14 trials for NMN. This suggests that scientists overwhelming choose NR when testing NAD boosters on human subjects. As well, the scientists at Nestlé chose NR over NMN when launching new food and beverage products selling to the general population. But while NR appears the safe choice, it remains abundantly concerning that even with the lack of regulatory body safety recognition, there’s obviously so much consumer demand for NMN that there are MANY companies still selling it. And each of these companies is selling something different. So it’s virtually impossible to know what you’re actually ingesting when taking NMN. And yet NMN remains incredibly popular. It’s a marketing triumph of significant proportions that so many consumers have been convinced to put something in their bodies that has so many red flags in plain sight. And then comes this:

I Missed a Day Taking Nicotinamide Riboside (NR). Is that a Problem?

There are many reasons one might miss a day taking vitamin supplement Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews). But what does it mean for us? Here’s what the folks at Chromadex said via email in response to a broad question about missing a day of supplementation or simply taking days off:

Forget the Science; A Practical Reason to be Skeptical of NMN

Dr. Charles Brenner often makes the scientific case for supplementing with Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Anecdotes) over NMN (FAQs and Anecdotes). But, he also believes there’s an even simpler reason. In the interview excerpt below, Dr Brenner starts with an explanation of the science and concludes with something many of us can more easily understand:

NMN vs. NR – What Should You Do?

We’ve covered this often asked and endlessly debated question repeatedly at RaisingNAD. Scientists say Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is the better choice — and Nestlé Health Science (a subsidiary of Nestlé), which recently launched a new product with NR as the key ingredient, calls NR: “the most efficient NAD+ precursor“. Yet, NMN (FAQs and Anecdotes) remains incredibly popular. So what should you do? Well, while Chromadex Chairman Frank Jaksch is obviously in the NR camp, he recently made a compelling case in plain English why the choice should be obvious.

Chromadex Chairman: “Mounting Evidence Has Linked Compromised NAD+ Status to the Hallmarks of Aging”

In a rare appearance, Chromadex Founder and current Executive Chairman Frank Jaksch joined the “Cellular Health: The Next Big Market Opportunity“ webcast last week to discuss NAD, Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Anecdotes), NMN (FAQs and Anecdotes), aging and more.
