Last week, NAD+ expert Dr. Charles Brenner (FAQs) was a guest on the “Beauty and the BS” podcast with Dr. Peter Grossman. They covered a wide range of topics including NAD+, Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Anecdotes), NMN (FAQs, Anecdotes), and anti-aging. Most notably, Dr. Brenner said the following in response to a question about the safety of NR (video excerpt embedded below):

From “Getting Real About Living Forever — Dr. Charles Brenner” (at the 16:50 mark):

HOST:

“Is there a contraindication to NR?

What are the detrimental effects?

DR. Charles Brenner:

“Not that we know of.

The human safety trials have been beautifully clean.

So, they’re placebo controlled.

And, so, if you look at enough person days, you’ll see, somebody had a headache.

But in a placebo-controlled trial, you can see whether there’s excess events when people were taking the tested compound.

And we’ve never seen anything come up in a placebo-controlled trial that made us concerned.

At the conclusion of the Parkinson’s trial, small Parkinson’s trial in Norway, the funding agency, which I think was the Norwegian government, asked Chromadex (sellers of NR, Niagen) to provide NR to all the participants.

Some were on placebo.

Some were on NR.

They unblinded the study.

They saw improvement in cerebral blood flow in Parkinson’s.

And, they said, sure, we want to do a larger trial.

But we want to give everybody that participated in this trial NR at this point.

So, it’s been beautifully safe.

And, it’s exciting for me because I was a yeast person trying to figure out how an enzyme works in 2002-3 when I discovered this vitamin activity in the pathway.

And, now, it’s all the way up to humans, and helping a lot of people.
