Why Does Dr. David Sinclair Take NMN Over NR?

Here’s what Harvard professor and aging researcher Dr. David Sinclair said about NMN (FAQs and Anecdotes) vs NR (FAQs) (Anecdotes) on a 2020 podcast (video embedded below):

At the 1:40:40 mark of the podcast below:

HOST: “…in terms of supplementation, I know you’re not gonna give specific recommendations.

But, basically, walking through what you do — you take a daily resveratrol, you take an NMN supplement which is basically a supplement oriented around promoting NAD?

SINCLAIR: Correct.

HOST: A different version of that would be NR (Nicotinamide Riboside) which is like one step removed from that same process?

SINCLAIR: Yeah.

So the body uses NR which is short for Nicotinamide Riboside.

It’ll convert NR into NMN and then NMN into NAD.

And that first step is this NAMPT gene.

So yeah, people are taking NR or they’re taking NMN.

NR is a little cheaper than NMN.

I’ve studied NMN.

People ask me: why not NR?

NMN, first of all, it’s more stable on the shelf. So that’s good.

But also I find that it produces some better effects in mice when say for endurance.

But the truth is, even though there’s a lot of chatter on the internet and some of my colleagues have their stakes in some companies — I, by the way, I don’t benefit from any supplements, ever. So I have no stake in this.

But, some of my colleagues and on the internet, they’re saying one is better than the other.

The truth is we really don’t know yet which is better or if they’re the same.

I take NMN because (A) I have a ready supply because we’re doing clinical trials — but also because I’ve studied it the most.”

“NMN, first of all, it’s more stable on the shelf.”

That’s the point! NMN will always be superior to NR when both are not stabilized.
