Dr. Charles Brenner (who discovered Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews) as an NAD boosting vitamin) is an expert on NAD, and is actively studying NR’s impact on the treatment of COVID-19. Brenner recently joined the Conn Jackson podcast to discuss his latest research. Key quotes from the 6 minute interview below:

Key Quotes from Dr. Brenner:

“The NAD system is required for all of our cells and tissues to function.

“We found….that the NAD system comes under attack in many conditions of metabolic stress including aging, smoking, overeating, alcohol consumption, heart failure, nerve damage.

“What we recently discovered is that coronavirus infection attacks the NAD system and that cells need NAD in order to mount an innate immune response to the virus.

“The research suggests that boosting NAD may help boost innate immunity that will block viral replication in the earliest stage of infection.

What Can We Do to Support the NAD System?

“NAD comes under attack in many conditions of metabolic stress — aging, overeating, heart failure, nerve degeneration, noise induced hearing loss, probably time zone disruption, and certainly a number of viral infections.

“What we’ve also discovered is that in many of these conditions of metabolic stress Nicotinamide Riboside (NR or TRU Niagen) — which is an NAD precursor (booster) vitamin — is something that the damaged cell is looking for. The NR gene pathway to replenish NAD gets turned up by damaged cells.

“We’ve shown that NR (TRU Niagen) is an orally available NAD precursor (booster) vitamin and in animal systems we know that NR has profound activity in preventing and treating conditions of metabolic stress from nerve damage to fatty liver and many others.

“We also know that Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is safe in humans and so it’s a very important topic of ongoing research to see to what degree NR will block viral infection.

How Do I Get NR?

“It’s not in your multivitamin.

There’s actually a supplement called Niagen or TRU Niagen whose one active ingredient is Nicotinamide Riboside (NR).

We’re not making a health claim on the basis of Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) with respect to viral infection. We’re doing research on that right now.

BUT what we’ve seen and what we’ve published and is available on bioRxiv.org shows that NAD is under attack with coronavirus infection and that the NR pathway is induced by coronavirus infection.

This suggests the possibility that NR will be a safe way to boost innate immune defenses.”

How Do We Learn More?

“To learn more about NAD you can go to AboutNAD.com. You can ask ME questions on Twitter”

Are You Excited by this Breakthrough?

“The laboratory is extremely excited about this. We’re working with 2 other groups Tony Fehr at University of Kansas and Mike Cohen at Oregon Health Sciences University. The 3 of our groups are in touch multiple times per week doing integrated research that we think has the potential to help boost innate immunity and resiliency against this virus.
