Despite skepticism from some NAD experts, NAD IV drip therapy (FAQs) appears to be gaining momentum thanks in large part to podcaster Joe Rogan. But, back in late 2018, FoundMyFitness‘ Dr. Rhonda Patrick said the following on the aforementioned Joe Rogan Experience (we have no evidence that her opinion has changed):
At the 1:45:30 mark of the podcast below:
Joe Rogan:
“Do you supplement with Niacin at all?
Dr Rhonda Patrick:
“No, I don’t supplement with Niacin.
But, I’m thinking about doing the Nicotinamide Riboside NR (FAQs).
Niacin…that’s been shown to lower LDL — the stuff that causes the flushing.
…The Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) forms NAD.
Niacin is a precursor for NAD — which is also increased during fasting
Joe Rogan:
We were going to get NAD IV injections.
We still have to do that, Jamie.
That company contacted us.
There’s two ways of doing that: (1) it takes 8 hours; or (2) it takes 10-15 minutes — and it’s excruciating
Dr. Patrick:
Like excruciating pain?
Joe Rogan:
Yeah. Like they push it through — and your guts feel like they’re on fire for like 10 minutes.
I want to try that just to see how bad it is.
Dr. Patrick:
The fast one? The 15 minute? 8 hours is a long time.
Joe Rogan:
Yeah. I don’t have 8 hours.
It’s not happening.
I’m not sitting around for 8 hours.
But, apparently there are some significant benefits to IV versions of it.
Ben Greenfield was on the podcast talking about it pretty in depth.
He’s a big believer of it.
Dr. Patrick:
I actually tried finding published studies on the IV version.
I really couldn’t find any at the time.
Joe Rogan:
I take the Elysium stuff too.
You recommended it to me.
I subscribe to that.
I get that stuff every day.
Dr. Patrick:
And there have been published clinical studies in humans on that.
Joe Rogan:
I take that stuff every day — I like it…I guess. I don’t know. I take a lot of things. I don’t know.
But, the NAD by intravenous method — it’s supposed to be a much more potent form of it…
Dr. Patrick:
So I wonder why some of these guys don’t start gathering data, start publishing? Because it would be nice to see some data on that.
Joe Rogan:
Yeah, it would be.
I wonder why.
Dr. Patrick:
It would be interesting to see if it has some of the similar benefits that taking Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) has — where if you take a high enough dose, you can raise your NAD levels dramatically.
Joe Rogan:
How many of those Elysium tablets are you taking on a daily basis?
Dr. Patrick:
I stopped taking them just now while I’m breastfeeding.
I’m always on the cautious side.
I think I was taking 250mg”
