During an interview earlier this week, NAD+ expert, Dr. Charles Brenner (FAQs) was asked whether daily consumption of vitamin supplement Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Life Changing Anecdotes) brought cancer risk. Here’s what he said:
NR and Cancer: (at the 31:05 mark of the video below):
HOST:
“You work in a cancer hospital.
Is there anything you can tell us, how can we — besides quit smoking — how can we avoid this (cancer) or maybe maximize any treatments that people are getting? Is NR safe if you’ve had cancer?
DR. Charles Brenner:
“We showed years ago that NR is protective against chemotherapeutic neuropathy.
The data were strong enough to support a clinical trial in that space that was initiated at University of Iowa, my former institution.
There are other folks that are planning subsequent trials.
We know that higher NAD status aids DNA repair.
And we’ve shown that — and Donna Hammond and others have shown that NR doesn’t block the effectiveness of cancer chemotherapy.
It suppresses tumor formation.
There was a very low quality study that gave everybody this big metastasis scare.
But then there’s a subsequent study that shows that when you look at carcinogenesis and the hallmarks of cancer, that higher NAD status is protective.
So we think that higher NAD status is really important for prevention of cancer and that it’s not going to inhibit effectiveness of cancer treatment or anything like that”
