Over the years, we’ve heard some remarkable anecdotes from consumers claiming skin benefits from taking NAD+ boosting vitamin supplement Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews). Could there be some basis for these claims? NAD+ expert Dr. Charles Brenner (FAQs) shared some news on this very topic during an appearance on the Darin Olien podcast this week:

At the 1:13:10 mark of the podcast below:

HOST:

What’s the most underrated benefit of NAD?

DR. CHARLES BRENNER:

“Underrated?

I’d say, skin.

So, like I said, skin is the biggest organ in the human body.

We know that Nicotinamide was trialled in Australia as a skin cancer preventative.

That trial was positive.

Supplementation of Nicotinamide in Australia was associated with lower incidents of skin cancer.

It was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

But, we’re going to test for wound healing.

And, then, I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you that NR has now been formulated topically.

So, there’s a startup in Seoul, South Korea called Juvenis, and I’m the chief advisor of that company as well.

They buy the Niagen from Chromadex, and figured out how to formulate it into a serum and a moisturizer.

And, now it’s going on topically.

There are clinical investigations of that in 4 and 8 week time points in a Korean population that showed an improvement in skin elasticity.

So, there’s a device that they use in these trials where they pinched the skin and they looked at its elasticity — its ability to come back.

And it had tremendous activity — like 25% improvement”

HOST:

“So, does that mean they figured out a way to transdermally receive NAD from…?

DR. BRENNER:

“So, NR looks like it goes into cells.

Nicotinamide has been in a lot of skin care products for a long time.

And so, Nicotinamide Riboside (NR), being the biggest piece of NAD that goes in (to cells), looks like it has added value, topically”
