During a podcast interview earlier this week, Dr. Charles Brenner (FAQs) was asked about NAD+ IVs (FAQs and Anecdotes). As both an NAD+ expert, and the discoverer of Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Life Changing Anecdotes) as an NAD+ boosting vitamin, Dr. Brenner is often asked about this increasingly popular treatment. Here’s Dr. Brenner’s most recent take:

At the 18:45 mark of the video embedded below:

HOST:

“…there was another point that Dr. Jin-Xiong She (a recent podcast guest) pointed out that even NAD infusions have some health benefits because of the neural receptors extracellularly changing activity within the cell when this NAD is in your bloodstream.

However, it does go out of your bloodstream after several hours and he finds that approach as limited.

However, there are a number of conditions and diseases that it’s being apparently successfully used for.

Do you have an opinion on NAD infusions, injections?

Dr. Charles Brenner:

“Yes, I have an opinion.

Once again, NAD has to be degraded to NR, and/or something smaller than NR.

The next degradation product would be Nicotinamide.

The next degradation product after that is nicotinic acid.

And, so, the three vitamin precursors of NAD are Nicotinic acid, Nicotinamide, and NR.

NR is the biggest piece of NAD that can get into cells.

People are going to a compounding pharmacy or something and getting a supply of NAD to be IV injected.

There’s no safety dossier for that (Safety dossier = In regulatory affairs, a dossier is a term used to describe a compilation and array of documents regarding the safety, efficacy, and quality information of a medical product).

Effectively what they’re doing is they’re taking IV NR.

Yes, there’s anecdotal reports that some people get benefits from this.

I think that effectively what they’re doing is they’re mega dosing NR, which they can do orally.

So it’s not something that I would advocate”
