Chromadex CEO Rob Fried joined The Morning Show with Ken Lanphear late last week. As with every media interview he’s involved in, we learned a bit more about Nicotinamide Riboside‘s “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews) possible impact on COVID-19 patients. And while he’s encouraged by progress toward treatments for those infected with COVID-19, he’s concerned about progress toward a vaccine. The following are key quotes:
Chromadex CEO Rob Fried on Promising Results from a Phase 2 Study with Patients Suffering Mild to Moderate COVID-19 Symptoms
“The study was conducted in Turkey on 100 hospitalized symptomatic COVID patients.
Of the 100 patients, 22 received the local standard of care as well as a placebo beverage — a placebo meaning there was nothing of significance in it.
The other 78 received the local standard of care with a cocktail of dietary supplements that included something called Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) also known as Niagen.
That group recovered 29% quicker than the group that did not receive that.”
Significance for the patients and future patients?
So there’s a co-enzyme in all living cells called N.A.D., Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide — which is a vital coenzyme for all key metabolic functions within the cell including the metabolism of energy but also the internal repair of cells.
There are enzymes inside cells called PARP enzymes that repair cell damage as it takes place.
They repel infections and viruses, eliminate inflammation, repair DNA damage.
These processes are NAD dependent.
And what we have shown is if you take Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) also known as Niagen then you elevate NAD levels and you strengthen the cell — not only its ability to manufacture energy but also to repair itself.
So it was intuitive — we expected to see that if people took this ingredient that their cells were better equipped to repel the virus once it penetrates.
And that’s why the results of the study were not a surprise to us.”
So we have all this in our bodies?
“Yes.
It (Nicotinamide Riboside = NR) actually exists in trace amounts in milk.
NAD is in all living cells — animal and plant cells.
It’s a vital coenzyme for all of those key metabolic processes — but it declines as we age or when we’re experiencing physiological stress like not enough sleep or exposure to the sun or overeating or exposure to an infection.
Maintaining high levels of NAD is important for having younger, stronger cells — for both the repair process and for the energy metabolism process.
And what we’ve shown is that by elevating these NAD levels by taking Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) your cells function much better.”
Is that the only way to reverse that decline and boost those NAD levels?
“It’s the only way to reverse it.
You can maintain healthy NAD levels just by having an active lifestyle, getting plenty of sleep, eating protein — as I said it’s in trace amounts in milk.
BUT the way to ELEVATE IT DRAMATICALLY would be to take Nicotinamide Riboside (NR).
So, what’s next?
“Well, we’re going to do a Phase 3 study.
This was a Phase 2 study.
The Phase 3 study will basically measure the same thing which is time to recover — only there will be more patients.
There were 100 patients in the first study.
This one will be 300 patients — and we’ve already commenced the recruiting process for that study.
How can we learn more?
“There have already been dozens of pre-clinical and clinical studies on virtually every condition one thinks of when one thinks of aging.
And we’ve shown a therapeutic benefit of Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) in elevating NAD levels in virtually all of these things.
There’s a website called AboutNAD for those interested in actually reading these studies and seeing all the studies that have been published on these conditions.”
Are you bullish on the eventual outcome of this?
“I think we’re dramatically understanding how the virus affects our bodies and how to treat it.
I’m concerned about the efficacy of these vaccines.
Vaccines are difficult and may take longer than we’d like for these vaccines to actually be out in the marketplace safely and effectively.
But I do think we’re showing great improvement in how to treat it once we come down with Coronavirus.
So, I’m bullish on that.”
