While some position NAD+ boosters Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews) and NMN (FAQs) as anti-aging supplements, NAD+ expert and NR consumer Dr. Charles Brenner (FAQs) goes to great lengths to focus on more realistic expectations. Here’s what he said on the Genius Life Podcast earlier this week:
At the 10:40 mark of the podcast embedded below:
HOST:
“There are many people today talking about anti-aging science, longevity science, calorie restriction, fasting, low protein diets.
What would you say are the biggest misconceptions out there currently when it comes to anti-aging or longevity science?
DR. CHARLES BRENNER:
“One of the misconceptions is that it’s going to be easy to extend the maximal lifespan of humans.
I don’t think that it is.
I think that the goal of human longevity research, and lifestyle, and practice is to get more people to be healthier to 90 or 100 or beyond.
I think that that’s achievable.
Actually, my laboratory developed something that potentially has a role in that.
As you know, we discovered “NR” Nicotinamide Riboside as a vitamin precursor of NAD.
NAD is the central catalyst of metabolism.
There’s a lot of conditions of metabolic stress in which NAD comes under attack ((alcohol/overnutrition/infection…).
You can take NR as an NAD precursor, as an oral supplement.
It is proven to be anti-inflammatory in seven different human trials.
It’s being tested in a lot of other things (Clinical Trials).
I don’t think it’s going to extend human lifespan.
But I think that there’s a potential for NR in helping people to age better”

Thank you, Ezra, for your insightful article on Nicotinamide Riboside and its implications in aging. While it’s important to approach anti-aging claims with skepticism, I appreciate Dr. Brenner’s realistic perspective on the potential of NR to improve health during aging rather than extending lifespan. It’s refreshing to see a focus on aging well, supported by research and clinical trials, rather than chasing elusive longevity. This balanced view helps set practical expectations for consumers.
