As the popularity of NAD+ boosting vitamin supplement Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews) grows, so do the number of consumer questions. To answer many of these questions, we have the luxury of turning to Dr. Charles Brenner who discovered NR as an NAD+ boosting vitamin and who often shares his scientific, evidence-based opinions on various podcasts:
Does Dr. Brenner take vitamin supplement NR?
Yes. He was the first person to take NR and continues to be a Niagen (NR brand) consumer.
He’s also chief scientific advisor at NR seller Chromadex.

What NR dose does Dr. Brenner take?
Dr. Brenner has said multiple times that he’s not your doctor and that he considers it irresponsible for PhD scientists like himself to broadly recommend off label drugs and the like.
He’s told multiple interviewers that the consumer dose of 300 mg per day elevates NAD.
He’s also said that Niagen has been safety tested up to 2 grams per day and that therapeutic trials are typically done at 1-2 grams per day.

What does Dr. Brenner say is the use case for NR?
In nearly every interview, Dr. Brenner emphasizes that “4 NAD coenzymes are the central catalysts of metabolism” and that “the NAD system comes under attack in many conditions of metabolic stress” including DNA damage, reactive oxygen stress, infection, inflammation, overweight, alcohol use, noise induced hearing loss, time zone disruption, heart failure, central and peripheral neurodegeneration, postpartum and probably the aging process itself.
Because the NAD system is required for repair and resiliency and because the NR kinase genes get turned up when the NAD system comes under attack, you are positioning yourself for a more resilient life by taking NR.

Does Dr. Brenner refer to NR as anti-aging?
No. But he appears to support the Niagen slogan “Age Better”.

Does Dr. Brenner support taking resveratrol?
No. Dr. Brenner has pointed out that evidence for resveratrol having its reported activities are lacking.

Does Dr. Brenner support taking pterostilbene?
No. Chromadex used to sell Pterostilbene. Then, Brenner noted human clinical data showing it raises low density lipoprotein cholesterol (i.e. bad cholesterol). As a result, the company no longer sells it.
