Harvard Alzheimer’s Expert Explains Why “I Religiously Take Tru Niagen” (Nicotinamide Riboside “NR”)

In a mid-November podcast appearance, Harvard neuroscientist and Alzheimer’s expert Dr. Rudy Tanzi made a compelling case for supplementing with Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Reviews). This week, he joined host Linda Cooper on “The New 100 Longevity Campaign” and shared even more. The following are key quotes.

Dr. Rudy Tanzi (at the 28:30 mark of the interview at bottom)

“I’m always really careful when I talk about supplements because until you do clinical trials……that show definitively that it reduces risk for Alzheimer’s you can only recommend it and say it’s a good idea.

…You have to be responsible and not give people false hope.

…my lab…we found about a dozen natural products that very effectively stop neuroinflammation in different ways or protect against it.

…when we find natural supplements that work in a dish — we’re now planning clinical trials with those.

But we haven’t done them yet.

So we can’t make any claims about reducing Alzheimer’s here.”

His Lab’s Natural Product Screening Results

“So, one of them (natural products identified in the lab that stop or protect against neuroinflammation) is Tru Niagen, Nicotinamide Riboside (NR), Chromadex.

…when we (Tanzi’s lab) built this Alzheimer’s in a dish model, we said “let’s go after natural products and supplements that fight plaques or tangles or neuroinflammation“.

One of them that worked is Nicotinamide Riboside “NR” (FAQs) (Consumer Reviews) which is sold as a supplement called Tru Niagen from Chromadex.

And I have since become a consultant for Chromadex.”

Dr. Tanzi’s Lab Work with NR

“And what we found is that Tru Niagen by providing extra energy to the cells helps make them resilient against forming tangles.

It also had an effect on the production of the amyloid plaques.

But what was most interesting to me recently is that it can induce the birth of new nerve cells in the brain — just like exercise does. Neurogenesis.

So, I religiously take Tru Niagen.

I feel great on it.

I can tell when I’m NOT on it.

You feel different.

…it’s Charlie Brenner (discoverer of NR as an NAD+ precursor vitamin) who brought me into the advisory board (at Chromadex). That’s how I got involved.

And I started taking it (NR) and I was sold.”

Plans for Clinical Trials Studying NR for Alzheimer’s

“…we’re starting a clinical trial on Tru Niagen for Alzheimer’s to see how it works in humans.

But until we do the trials we can’t make any claims.

All we can say is “here’s what we see in the lab. And here’s what we predict could happen. It looks to be safe”.

So I recommend Tru Niagen to family and friends, and sports teams (New England Patriots) where they get banged in the head etc.”

How does NR make you feel?

“Tru Niagen gives you a lot of energy and boost.

You just feel younger and vibrant.

That’s how I feel with that.”
